Chalk and Water

The other day, we decided to have art time outside. We brought a basket of sidewalk chalk, a bowl of water, and Simon’s paint brushes.

We had a lot of fun.

Simon was more interested in painting with the water on the ground, than drawing or painting with the chalk. However, he loved making the discovery that chalk, when dipped in water, changes and intensifies in color. He also really enjoyed throwing all of the chalk into the grass and then going to retrieve it all again. Using the brushes to splash in the puddles that he created was also exciting for him. He has since asked to “Go paint outside?” again.

I think taking materials that are usually for indoor use out to play encourages exploration and imagination. (As a bonus, it also makes clean up a lot easier in the case of art materials.)

Have you made any art outside lately? What creative things have you done with sidewalk chalk?

  1. I think I’ll try this. We live in an apartment but I just discovered a concrete area that we were able to draw on with chalk, so I’m totally excited to go again! Glad Simon enjoyed the craft!

  2. Smashing idea.. might just go do this a bit later 🙂 We chalk the patio a far amount the only creative flair I have to add is collecting twigs and leaves to frame the masterpiece. maybe better for a slightly older child than yours 🙂

  3. How fun!

We have been making mud puddles lately : )

  4. We love our sidewalk chalk. The kids are always making paths for us to follow and hopscotch games, etc. So much fun!
