The Ocean At Last!

Oh, the ocean at last! One of the things I have been itching to scratch off my summer to-do list since the very first sunny and warm days arrived. It was well worth waiting for, and I promise to do it again before summer’s end.

My aunt and uncle invited my relatives on my dad’s side of the family to their home in Harpswell, Maine for the day to have a barbecue, since we had family from Chicago visiting. Some of them I had never met before, so we made sure to be there. We spent some time at the house eating good food and chatting, but the draw of the ocean was very strong, and we found ourselves twice walking the path down to the rocks.

We hunted for sea glass, caught a couple of crabs and a small toad, skipped stones, climbed on the rocks, dipped our feet into the cold Maine ocean water, took in the view, and breathed in as much of the fresh air as we possibly could.

The ocean is one of my absolute favorite things about my home state. Being at the sea makes me feel so good, and so connected to nature. I love the constant breezes and salty mists. I love the smooth, worn rocks and colorful patches of seaweed. I love the views and the way the sun glints off the water.

This might have been Simon’s first time ever at the ocean, now that I think about it. What a travesty, considering we live within an hour drive. I am already glancing at the calendar, making mental plans for the next day we can go back.
