Motherhood, Art, Creative Play, and Finding Joy in Everyday Life

My little guy created this sculpture/feat of engineering all by himself yesterday. In the last photo here he had just proudly shouted: “I did it!” A creative new way to use his wooden tea set for sure. I just love it when he comes up with things like this with absolutely no prompting from Jeramy or me.

Perhaps the best part is that, as you can tell from the photos, this “tower” fell over several times, and yet he persevered without even needing encouragement. Each time he would pick it all back up and start again, with a look of strong determination on his face. This is something that I, as a Mom, desire to instill in him as he grows up: to stick with a goal, to keep trying even after failure. Wooden tea cups and a half-full bottle of seltzer might be a very basic and beginning way to learn this lesson, but it just might be a great start.
