I believe it was when we were in high school, and we had a friend with a license and a car, that Jeramy and I first went to Hodgman’s Frozen Custard. Their special flavor of the day was pumpkin, and it was so amazing that we each had a cone while we were there, and then purchased a quart to bring back home. Ever since then it has been a summer tradition for Jeramy and I to make many visits there during their season of business.
They open on Mother’s Day each year, and for the past three I have requested that we go. In 2010, it was the day we brought Simon home from the hospital, and later in the evening we went for the drive. I stayed in the car with our new baby while Jeramy got in line to get our cones. Last year Simon was old enough to try a little lick, but it was too cold for him. He just made a squished up face and didn’t try it again. This year he thought it was too cold again, but then our generous friend Eric shared some of his peanut butter cup mix-ins with Simon, and made his day.
If you should happen to be near New Gloucester, Maine between Mother’s Day and Labor Day, I highly recommend stopping in at Hodgman’s. They always have vanilla and chocolate, and one special flavor of the day. They close up shop on Monday and Tuesday in order to make more custard, so be sure to check the day of the week! And don’t forget to peek in at the funny goats while you are there!
