Simon’s Pick: No More Diapers For Ducky by Bernette Ford (Author), Sam Williams (Illustrator).
From the very first time I read this book to him, Simon has been requesting it daily, especially while he sits on the potty. Sometimes, Daddy or I will finish reading it, and he will immediately cry: “Ducky again!” Of all the potty related books that we have brought home from the library, this one has definitely resonated with him the most. Jeramy and I both love the charcoal and watercolor illustrations.

Ducky wears a diaper.
It feels cold.
It feels wet.
Ducky wriggles out of her diaper.
She kicks her diaper across the floor.
Knock, knock, knock!
“Let me in,” says Ducky.
“I have to use the potty.”

Daddy’s Pick: The Geek Dad: Book For Aspiring Mad Scientists by Ken Denmead.
I brought this book home from the library for Jeramy to read on a complete whim. I took one glance at the cover and thought: “This will be right up his alley.” It turned out I was right. Jeramy said he liked a lot of the projects in the book, and would love to do them with Simon when he is older. A lot of the experiments and projects would also make great homeschooling activities. I have since learned that there is another book in the series: Geek Dad: Awesomely Geeky Projects and Activities for Dads and Kids to Share by the same author that we will definitely have to check out soon.

For many mad scientists, world domination is not only a dream, it’s a responsibility. One is burdened with the weight of overwhelming intelligence and insight into humanity, combined with the technical skill to pull off complicated schemes that lesser minds cannot even fathom.
Of course, you’re just doing what’s right for the greater good! What’s a surefire way to achieve your goals if you are able to use its power wisely? (and you must promise to use it wisely and responsibly). Mind control! This experiment will show you how to subtly affect other people’s minds.

Mumma’s Pick: Snuff by Terry Pratchett. I may be a tad biased toward this book, because Pratchett is my favorite author, and the main character of this book is my favorite of all his characters. It is about a workaholic police commander who attempts to take a holiday in the countryside with his wife and son, and who nonetheless find a mystery to solve, and a crime committed. Pratchett is a very prolific author, who mostly writes about a place called the Discworld. Within the expansive series of Discworld novels, there are mini series that follow certain characters. My favorites are the books about The Watch (police) and Commander Vimes, because despite the fantasy setting (there are trolls, goblins, vampires, werewolves, dwarves, etc.) they are essentially mystery novels….and I am a sucker for a good mystery. (And also someone who likes whimsy and humor.)

Woman’s logic, Sam thought: everything is going to be all right because it ought to be all right. The trouble is, reality is never as simple as that and doesn’t allow for the paperwork.

I think I might make this a regular feature on the blog from time to time. Our favorites are ever-changing, and I know I always love getting detailed recommendations from others. Also, I really enjoyed selecting a blurb from each book for you. Have you read any of these books? If so, please comment and share your opinion. Also, I would love to hear what you are currently enjoying.

Disclaimer: I am not being paid for my endorsements here on this blog. I would never recommend anything that we did not truly enjoy. However, this blog does participate in the Amazon Affiliates program, which means that should you click on my links and make a purchase, I would receive a small percentage of the sale. I would still share these items with you even if my blog were not part of the program.

  1. oooh..thank you! I just ordered the ‘no more diapers for ducky’ we are potty training Lucca…yay!

  2. Is he potty-trained yet?

    • Not yet. He began asking back at the start of winter, but then when we all got sick for two weeks and took a break we backpedaled. Now he has lost interest for the time being. We get him to go on the potty daily now, but we have to do all the instigating. From what I have read this is a normal phase. We are just trying to ride it out, keep praising him when he does go, but not pressure him. Last thing we want is to freak him out.

  3. Thanks for the recommendations! I think I would like the Geek Dad book.

I have never read ANYTHING in fantasy / mystery but I may consider because of your personal recommendation and the humor part intrigues me.

    • If you do get into Pratchett, you should be aware that some books reference events from previous ones. You don’t have to have read them in order to enjoy them, but it does help you get all of the little jokes.

  4. 2 things:

1 – are you planning on homeschooling Simon when he is ready for school?

2 – how does one become a part of that Amazon program?
