Simple Handmade Musical Shakers

Today I made some simple handmade musical instruments with Simon. (And by with, I really mean for him, while showing him what I was doing, and letting him hold stuff.) We already have a selection of instruments for him (and us!) to play with at home, but I thought it would be fun to change it up a little with something new and handmade.

I simply took some paper towel tubes, and trapped some dried green peas inside by taping brown paper over the ends. (I would have used duct tape but couldn’t find any, so the paper was used with masking tape instead.) Then we turned on the itunes playlist to Simon’s favorite CD and shook our homemade maracas to the beat, or tapped them on things for a different effect.

Making homemade instruments took me less than two minutes, and we had a lot of fun!

Note: you could stick anything small inside, such as pennies or buttons if you don’t have dried beans on hand like I did.
