Up-cycled: T-shirt to Plush Dinosaur

Today I did a quick little sewing project for Simon. I took one of his shirts, which was stained on one sleeve and a tad small for him, and re-purposed it into a plush dinosaur pillow.

First I pinned all around the dinosaur design on the t-shirt. I had to be extra careful to keep both layers flat, as the fabric has a stretch to it.

Then I cut out all around the design, leaving some extra space for seam allowance.

Next, I took out all of my pins, flipped the fabric right sides together, and re-pinned. Again, very carefully to avoid bunching of the stretchy t-shirt fabric.

Then, I got out my sewing machine, chose some coordinating green thread, and sewed all around the shape, leaving a gap of about an inch for flipping and stuffing.

I turned the fabric right side out, stuffed it with some filling, and then hand-sewed the gap closed. All done! It isn’t perfect, but since I am still learning to sew, and have never used stretchy fabrics before, I am not too uptight about it. Besides, it is for Simon to play with, and he won’t notice the tiny imperfections.

This is a great way to bring a new life to a favorite piece of a child’s clothing that is beyond saving or handing down. Since the stain on this one was not on the dinosaur, I was able to up-cycle it into something fun. Now I find myself wondering if there are any more clothes he has worn out with cool designs on the front…
