Mumma and Son Painting Time

Today it was just me and my boy, all day. Daddy could only stop at home for a few minutes in-between a long day at work, and a work-related dinner event afterward. Days like this feel long and strange.

After naptime and lunch, I decided to haul out the painting I have been working on, and to get Simon all set up to paint too. Previously, I had discovered he preferred to use q-tips as paintbrushes, rather than his fingers. So the last time we were in a craft store I let him pick out his very own paintbrush. Today was his first time using it, and he took right to it as though he had been using one all his life, although he also did use his hands a bit in the end. He made three paintings, and then added some paint to the paper hearts we colored on yesterday. I made some good progress on my own piece, leaving just some final detailed brushwork to do.

I truly believe in this kind of role-modeling. I know that Simon is always more likely to do something if I do it too, and participation in creative activities together also helps us bond. If he sees that his Mumma loves to paint and make art, he will come to know it as fun. Even if I had just been playing around with paint, and not working on a specific piece, it is always good to spend this kind of time together.

I am still not sure what will become of these hearts in the end, but that isn’t what is important. It is all about sharing the creative process with my little guy.

  1. Looks like SO MUCH FUN!!!

  2. Looks like a great time! I don’t enjoy painting, but my kids do. I don’t get out the paints even 1/8 as often as I should because I hate the mess. I need to give that up and let them have at it! Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

    • I try really, REALLY hard to go for it regardless of mess. I know the process is more important than the product at this age…yet sometimes when you know the clean up that is involved it is hard.

  3. Looks like you might have a little artist on your hands!

  4. My Chloe doesn’t seem to like paint on her fingers either… time to get her a brush or try q-tips! Thanks for the idea!

  5. Little artist indeed:)) LOVE the painting in the first beautiful!

  6. Thanks for the reminder to get the kids all creative and messy even if it disturbs my sense of order…. I’m going to run get out our crafty stuff right now!
