Winter’s Arrival

Well, what a morning it has been. I think Maine has decided to get on with Winter. Simon and I woke this morning to a world of snow and wind. After he was dressed, I bundled him for the first time ever in his snowsuit, making him seem suddenly twice his normal size, and we headed outside.

I showed him how to make snowballs and stack them, and how to leave footprints in places where Daddy had already shoveled and a light dusting was forming a fresh cover. He loved watching the grown-up people shovel, and wanted to trek all around the house along the already half-buried paths that had been carved earlier in the morning. After a while, I could tell the wind and chill were getting the better of him and his still exposed cheeks, so we returned to the warmth inside and shed our extra layers.

My best friend, who lives in the same apartment building, provided our family with freshly baked coffee cake and poured a hot cup of black coffee for me. Simon chugged his milk and enjoyed the novelty of playing with another child’s toys.

I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the arrival of Winter, can you?

  1. I LOVE today’s sketch – you have a really nice style! Snow is fun again when you have kids!

  2. You might roll your eyes at this but I’m so jealous! I’ve never been in heavy snow on the ground like this. I’ve been in the mainland while it was snowing but it was always quickly melted. I always just miss the snow! When I return to Hawaii from a trip, I’ll turn on the news and it’s a winter wonderland everywhere.

I don’t think I could handle it day in and day out but just once…

  3. We woke up to snow this morning also. And as much as I hate winter, just seeing how excited the boys were made me excited also 🙂

  4. it was so great to have ALL of our two families together, even for just a bit. it has been too long! we need to start having a monthly brunch or something…

  5. I’m not sure I realized you were from Maine (I live here too!) Glad you had a wonderful SNOW day 🙂

  6. This is so great! My kids have been watching carefully for snow this week. Such joy to be able to go and play and get wet and cold and then warm up afterward! Thanks for sharing this.

  7. Hot coffee, fresh coffee cake, and snow. I love that combination. There’s something about the picture with the three snow shovels that I like. I can’t quite put my finger on it.. it might be a composition thing, but I do like that picture.

    • My favorite photo of the bunch too! In the new year we are getting a new camera, as mine has been on the fritz since an unfortunate dropping accident, and I cannot wait to do some better photography! For now i am stuck with what the point and click mode can do, as the focusing mechanism will not work, and the flash acts weird.

  8. We just have a few days of winter here. No snow though. I can see you are having lots of fun. Happy for ya! I just put up something new on my blog and would love to hear from you! Do drop by soon 😀
