As I recently mentioned, autumn brings out the crafter in me. Perhaps I am somehow tapping into an instinct from my ancestors who would perform tasks that in the “old days” were out of necessity, but in this modern age we view them as hobbies and crafts. Sewing and knitting warm clothes, fixing up the home, baking and canning foods…all of these were once done out of the need to prepare for colder days ahead. Nowadays we have the luxury of shopping, driving, and hiring others, but it seems that for many of us, that innate compulsion to partake in some of these activities lives on. Why else would so many people still find their zen in creating something, even when finances or location do not require them to?
As for me, I would much rather own an item that someone lovingly crafted, than one that I purchased at my local shopping mall. I don’t give one whit about brand names. Offer me a free Louis Vuitton handbag and I will trade it in for 100 handsewn ones without hesitation. (Although, not really, because even I, a lover of pretty handbags, could never need that many. But you get my point, right?)
The impending holiday season has me all excited to create as well. Halloween is coming, and costumes will be made. (No store-bought costume compares to the joy of making and imagining up one of your own.) Thanksgiving is on the horizon, with lots of yummy baking and cooking to prepare and enjoy. Advent and Christmas follow that, with the excitement of decorating and gift-making.
Every year I dream of the perfect, simple, handmade Christmas. No commercialism, just pure gratitude and spirit. I know I cannot expect things to happen the way I dream of 100%, because there are other people and the media around me to contend with. (Despite our best efforts to minimize the commerialism being thrown at us.) However, I also know that this past year has brought many changes to our family that will improve the likelihood this year of things staying simpler. I work less hours away from home, I have a renewed sense of myself, and I think Jeramy and I have a clearer shared vision of what we want and do not want for this family.
Anyway, I am getting ahead of myself. September is still here for a couple more days, and I am loving the Fall sunshine! I have also started dipping my toes into the crafting waters, and here are a couple of sneak previews of what I have been up to:
Note: I have been tweaking my blog design as well, as you may have noticed. Please see that on my sidebar I now have a list of links to things I currently find inspiring (a list that will change as I find more wonderful things on the internet to share with you), links to my flickr and pinterest accounts, and links in support of some of the wonderful, creative people I have the pleasure of knowing, and who inspire me all of the time. Enjoy!
